Entering retirement is an exciting step, but just like many other exciting steps throughout our lives, we all tend to have some questions. For many, the biggest questions are to do with staying connected with friends and family while exploring this next phase of life. In this article, we want to explore some ways that you can stay connected with your friends and family, generate new connections, and engage with the community around you.
One of the easiest ways to connect with those around you is to find a hobby that get you out there and engaging with new people. Finding an activity that you enjoy is also a great way of looking after more than just your social connections. It can be a great way of reinvigorating a past interest, keeping yourself fit or exploring something entirely new!
Many people find that taking up a form of exercise is a great way to both look after their health and form connections with a new community of like minded individuals.
We’re also strong advocates of getting back into the classroom. Retirement is the perfect time to get back to a past interest, maybe give learning that language another crack or expand your knowledge on a topic like history or literature.
Hobbies tend to come with their own communities of interesting and interested people. Have a look around and we’re sure you’ll find something that you can get into.
You’d be amazed at how quickly you can get to grips with some of the unfamiliar technology that your friends and family are using.
The freedom to check in with a quick video chat or get an insight into your loved ones lives via social media is just too good to pass up when all it takes is a few tutorials and some trial and error. Brush up on your existing computer skills or develop new ones by enlisting a tech savvy friend or taking a class!
Volunteering is a brilliant way of staying connected with the community around you, and there is a whole world of ways for you to get involved. Common volunteering opportunities include helping prepare and distribute meals and clothing to those less fortunate, taking part in big community events, or even stepping in to help coach a youth sports team.
Volunteering gives you precious opportunities to contribute to the wider community and take pleasure in the gift of giving. Look to groups or organisations in your local area or get online and look for the volunteering opportunities that speak to you.
